When I first heard the term “bollard,” I did not know what that was… Then someone told me and I had to learn. I had just started working in a lighting manufacturing company and that is when I first heard this term; “bollard.” May be you already know what they are but I did not. Now I am intimate with them, more than I like. They are actually more common in industrial parks or office complexes and shopping centers than they are at homes. They usually light up walkways, driveways and entries as an area light. They are very solid- usually metal and a good gauge – and actually look like they could take a good hit. They look and feel very sturdy. They are mounted in to the concrete in most cases and bolted down.
Although they don’t catch your eye during the day, at night you will notice how nice they can light up a walkway or a corner or an entryway to a building. Usually when you see one bollard you will see many of them as they are rarely alone.
Generally all bollards in the industry today are wired and use either HID or fluorescent lighting.
Now they also are available with LED and that makes them a good candidate for solar power. Solar powered bollards are available. I have not personally tested any of them but I see no reason why they would not work just as good as the regular bollards. They have plenty of room for their batter packs and for their solar panels as they are much larger than your typical solar powered garden light. Here is a company that offers a bunch of them, you can get an idea. At Amazon there is a brand that seems to be selling well. It is called Malibu Outdoor Metal Bollard. It has a couple of good reviews. If you go to our Amazon store and type the search for “bollard” you can get to see it and read the reviews.
