If you want to add decorative lighting to your garden or highlight a walk way to your home or want to light up your porch you can use solar garden lights. These lights are designed for out door use and get their power during the day from the sun and turn that into light after dusk and do this automatically. Solar lights can be used for security purposes as well. They are durable made from the same materials as traditional fixtures, like copper, bronze, cast iron. You can also find some cheap plastic solar lights. They come in many shapes and sizes, they can be staked into the ground, they can hang or be mounted on a wall.

These fixtures can be quickly and easily installed as they don’t require any wires. Solar powered lights are free to operate as they get their power from the sun and are highly efficient as because they mostly use LED light sources and can come in different colors. It is possible to get really elaborate and design a system where colors change periodically.

Solar garden lights can detect the dusk and turn on automatically. They also turn off when they detect the sunrise. When you compare these benefits to the traditional fixtures where you have to have wires and need to dig up your garden or wire around the structures, turn it on and off your self or with an automated switch. And to top it all of you have to pay the electric bill to operate them.

Solar powered light fixtures for your yard is the only choice when you compare all the factors. The bulbs you use on a traditional fixture will not last as long as the LED not even close. Many solar garden lights are compact. Each fixture comes with its own panel, dusk sensor, battery, and LED. There are some solar lights that are sold as sets with each light having its own solar panel. As long as the panel gets enough sunlight, these lights can be installed in the shade.

Ultimately solar garden lights are “Green.” You use the sun’s energy and don’t deplete resources. And you will be surprised how nicely they illuminate your garden, walkway, patio and you don’t need and electrician to do it.

When I first heard the term “bollard,” I did not know what that was… Then someone told me and I had to learn. I had just started working in a lighting manufacturing company and that is when I first heard this term; “bollard.” May be you already know what they are but I did not. Now I am intimate with them, more than I like. They are actually more common in industrial parks or office complexes and shopping centers than they are at homes. They usually light up walkways, driveways and entries as an area light. They are very solid- usually metal and a good gauge – and actually look like they could take a good hit. They look and feel very sturdy. They are mounted in to the concrete in most cases and bolted down.

Although they don’t catch your eye during the day, at night you will notice how nice they can light up a walkway or a corner or an entryway to a building. Usually when you see one bollard you will see many of them as they are rarely alone.
Generally all bollards in the industry today are wired and use either HID or fluorescent lighting.

Now they also are available with LED and that makes them a good candidate for solar power. Solar powered bollards are available. I have not personally tested any of them but I see no reason why they would not work just as good as the regular bollards. They have plenty of room for their batter packs and for their solar panels as they are much larger than your typical solar powered garden light. Here is a company that offers a bunch of them, you can get an idea. At Amazon there is a brand that seems to be selling well. It is called Malibu Outdoor Metal Bollard. It has a couple of good reviews. If you go to our Amazon store and type the search for “bollard” you can get to see it and read the reviews.

I know these kind of lights can also benefit businesses and commercial buildings as they can be attached to the side of the roof on a pole and illuminate the surroundings intensley. They are different than your typical garden solar lights in that they are designed to shoot a high intensity light and they are designed to flood a big radius. If you ever had one of these come on when you walked by them you know what I am talking about and unlike the garden lights these are designed to turn off after a short period of time, they don’t stay on until the sun comes up.

Around your home you can use them to come on in the back yard, by your entrance and like my neighbor you can use it to flood an area between the houses and when someone walks the path between the houses they come on.

Also unlike the garden lights these have a device that turns on when there is motion and don’t come on when the sun goes down. Their solar panels can be placed on the roof where they can get really good light and most come with wiring. They use high power LED or halogen type lamps and these things last a very long time with very little maintenance. Make sure you keep the motion detector clean and un-obstructed.

For your home these are very cost effective over the long run and green but will cost abit more than the security lights with wires and have to be pluged in or wired to your home. If you own a business replacing your flood lights around the perimeter for security with these solar powered security lights will bring you lots of savings and years of worry free operation.
