Your doorbell is the first thing that the visitor encounters when arriving at your home. Although, the wired doorbell looks simple from outside but, it is very complicated when it comes to its internal circuitry. A small fault in the doorbell brings a lot of trouble and confusion to the homeowners as well as the visitors.
Fortunately, repairing or replacing a broken doorbell is well within the skills of most homeowners. All it takes is some knowledge, and of course the right tools. Here are the tools you’ll need to repair your doorbell: A screwdriver, electrical tape, a multimeter, wire connectors, and an old toothbrush.
Before you plan to fix a broken door bell, you must first acquire a little knowledge regarding the project. Well, this article will surely help you in fixing a broken door bell. Here are some very simple steps to diagnose the door bell if it doesn’t chime at all.
Firstly, ensure that the push button of the door bell is working fine. Doing this, you would require to take out the button arrangement from the wall. This is done to keenly observe all the connections and to improve the ones that are loose and limp.
If the situation is still complicated, certainly the problem is in the chime box. So, time to examine that. Uncover the box and test all the wiring placed in it. Direct your helpmate to hit the buzzer switch. Meanwhile, you test the circuit tester using the multimeter. Determine the circuit voltage, which should be approximately 12 or 13 volts. If you find the same reading, the wiring to the bell is fine.
But if the reading is not as mentioned above, there might be some loose connections in the bell circuitry. And this is the point were you may need an expert-a friend or a repair service.
Anyhow, if the meter is showing the desired voltage and still the bell is not working, disconnect power to that particular place and take out the chime box from the wall. Examine all the wires and their connections. Ensure, no loose connection is left, as this could lead to malfunctioning of the bell unit. Beware of the color coding and other manufacturer’s instructions while connecting the wires.
Once you are done up with all the connections, place the box cover and secure it with the screws. Push the bell button to assure its working. If the bell is ringing, you are qualified in the repairing project. Call in an expert if you fail to do that.
